Threads of Inspiration: The Whimsical World of Kathy’s Fibre Art Journey

Her overarching message was simple yet profound: stay true to yourself and find joy in what you create. When you’re authentic, you’ll connect with the right audience—those who appreciate the heart behind your work.

In my latest instalment of the Threads of Inspiration series, I had the privilege of sitting down with Kathy from More Fun With Felt, a fibre artist who has transformed personal healing and creativity into enchanting works of art. Our conversation was a heartwarming exploration of her journey into needle felting, her challenges, and the vibrant community she's built along the way. Here are the key takeaways from our conversation that resonated with me and can serve as a beacon for anyone on their creative journey.

Rediscovering Creativity Through Needle Felting

Kathy's story begins with an unexpected suggestion from her therapist: find a hobby. Little did she know that this advice would unlock a world of whimsy and therapeutic creation. Starting with a Christmas gift for her husband's beloved dog, Max, Kathy stumbled upon needle felting. “It was terrible,” she laughed, “but I did my best.” Despite broken needles and early frustrations, the process became a refuge—a way to channel emotion and find peace.

Kathy’s first attempts were far from perfect, but they sparked something within her. With leftover wool and determination, she kept experimenting, gradually falling in love with the art form.

The Power of a Cheerleader

Behind every great artist is often someone cheering them on, and for Kathy, that person is her sister, Laura. It was Laura who encouraged Kathy to take her creations beyond the family circle. “She pushed me out of my comfort zone,” Kathy shared, recounting her first trade show experience with Laura by her side. “She’s my biggest supporter and always introduces me to everyone as the artist behind these creations.”

This bond underscores the importance of community and support, particularly when venturing into the vulnerable world of sharing your art.

From Hobby to Business: Valuing Your Work

Like many creators, Kathy initially struggled with pricing her work. One memorable e xperience involved a sculpture named Rosie, a “crazy cat lady” surrounded by adoring felines. Priced at $120—a figure Kathy thought was too high—Rosie sold almost immediately. “I cried when she left,” Kathy admitted, reflecting on the emotional attachment she develops to her pieces. These moments taught Kathy a valuable lesson: handmade art has worth. Her growing confidence in pricing reflects a shift many artists experience as they

reconcile the love of their craft with its monetary value.

The Magic of Storytelling Through Fibre Art

Kathy’s sculptures often feature animals and nature-inspired themes, each imbued with a unique narrative. “Nature and animals were my safe space growing up,” she explained. This deep connection translates into her work, where whimsical characters like a mama bear with three distinct cubs reflect her own life and observations.

Her most notable creation, “Chip the Christmas Mouse”, embodies her passion for storytelling and technical growth. Chip’s open mouth and delicate hands challenged her skills, but he also became a tool for teaching others. “Seeing others create their versions of Chip is the most rewarding part,” Kathy said.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth

Navigating the technical world of YouTube has been a steep learning curve for Kathy, but with the help of her son, she’s created tutorials that inspire others. “There were times I wanted to give up,” she confessed. Yet, her determination to share her craft kept her going, proving that perseverance often leads to unexpected rewards. I believe recently she hit over 1k subscribers which is fabulous news!

Kathy reflects on her son Q's support for her YouTube channel “He has done so much for me from creating thumbnails, teaching me how to use CapCut for editing and how to upload via Google Drive. I would be lost without him! My husband, daughter and mother are also all HUGE supporters and always encourage me to continue with my dream”.

A Whimsical World of Possibilities

Kathy’s journey is a testament to the healing power of creativity, the importance of community, and the magic of storytelling through art. Whether she’s crafting characters with lifelike expressions or teaching others to do the same, her work resonates with a childlike wonder that invites us all to dream.

Let Kathy’s story remind you that it’s never too late to rediscover your creative spark—and when you do, surround yourself with people who believe in your magic.

The Balancing Act of Passion and Practicality

As creatives, many of us wrestle with balancing our passions with the realities of life. Kathy candidly spoke about her Shopify website, an ongoing project that hasn’t yet yielded the success she envisioned. She’s exploring ways to integrate her platforms—YouTube, Facebook, Etsy, and her website—into a harmonious business circle.

What stood out was Kathy’s determination to embrace the learning curve and her acknowledgment that progress takes time. Her advice struck a chord: you can’t do everything all at once. It’s a reminder to pace ourselves, allowing both our craft and our understanding of the business side to evolve naturally.

Memorable Moments and Meaningful Creations

One of Kathy’s stories exemplifies the power of handmade art to forge deep connections. A customer commissioned a purple dragon that turned into a month-long collaboration. By the end, this dragon wasn’t just a craft—it was a tribute to someone who had profoundly impacted the customer’s life.

Hearing Kathy describe how her creation brought joy and healing gave me goosebumps. It’s a powerful reminder that the pieces we make often carry far more meaning than we realise. The love and care we pour into our work are felt by those who receive it, creating bonds that transcend the physical object.

Embracing Imperfection and Artistic Identity

Kathy’s whimsical style defines her brand, but she’s also faced the challenge of aligning her vision with customers’ expectations. Her solution? Set clear boundaries and embrace her unique artistic interpretation.

“I can’t be a taxidermist needle-felter,” she said with humour. “Everything I create carries a touch of whimsy.” This self-awareness allows her to create joyfully and authentically a lesson that resonates with anyone navigating their creative identity.

Advice for Fellow Creators

Kathy shared wisdom for anyone embarking on a creative journey:

  • Know your style. Lean into what makes your work unique and let that guide your artistic expression.
  • Set boundaries. Clearly communicate what you can and cannot offer in commissioned work.
  • Embrace imperfection. Art reflects who we are in the moment, and it’s okay if it doesn’t align with someone else’s vision of “perfect.”

Her overarching message was simple yet profound: stay true to yourself and find joy in what you create. When you’re authentic, you’ll connect with the right audience—those who appreciate the heart behind your work.

The Joy of Creation

One of Kathy's most profound insights was the importance of loving what you do. Creativity, she reminded us, isn’t just a hobby—it’s a “full-time job after our full-time job.” If you’re going to spend your evenings immersed in your craft, you must genuinely enjoy it. Kathy’s philosophy is a powerful reminder to all creators: passion should drive our work, not obligation.

Navigating the Ugly Duckling Stage

Kathy beautifully described how every piece of art undergoes an “ugly duckling stage.” Whether you're a seasoned artist or a beginner, it’s easy to fall into the trap of self-doubt when your work doesn’t immediately match your vision. Her advice? Step away, take a break, and return with fresh eyes. “Everything is fixable,” she shared, reminding us that persistence and patience are key in both art and life.

Finding Confidence Through Courage

Impostor syndrome—something Kathy and I both related to—can be a persistent challenge for many creators. Kathy candidly shared how her sister’s encouragement pushed her to move beyond her comfort zone, helping her discover unexpected confidence. For Kathy, bravery has been a step-by-step process of setting goals and reaching them, even when it felt daunting.

I was struck by her ability to frame confidence as a result of being brave in the moment. This subtle shift in mindset can inspire us all: when confidence feels elusive, simply take one brave step forward.

Staying True to Yourself

In a world brimming with trends and comparisons, Kathy emphasised the importance of authenticity. “Be yourself,” she urged. Finding and honing your unique voice as an artist not only fosters deeper creativity but also ensures your work resonates with the right audience. For Kathy, that authenticity translates into creating whimsical Woollies—adorable one-inch creatures that delight her customers and spark joy.

Balancing Passion with Practicality

Kathy’s reflections on managing a creative business were particularly insightful. She highlighted the delicate balance between maintaining passion and fulfilling the demands of running a business. When social media or other business aspects start feeling like a chore, she retreats to her art to recharge. Her approach underscores the importance of prioritising joy in the creative process to avoid burnout.

What’s Next for Kathy?

Kathy’s excitement about her upcoming beginner’s kits and the creation of a two-foot Bigfoot project showcases her evolving goals as an artist. Her kits aim to welcome new needle-felting enthusiasts, providing everything needed to dive into the craft. It’s heartening to see her sharing her passion with others in such a meaningful way.

A Community of Connection

For Kathy, the needle-felting community has been a source of immense joy and inspiration. She cherishes the connections she’s built—whether through simple messages from admirers or in-depth conversations with fellow artists. Her openness and willingness to connect are a testament to the power of community in nurturing creativity.

Final Thoughts

As our conversation drew to a close, I was struck by Kathy’s courage and authenticity in sharing her story. Her openness not only invites connection but also inspires others to embrace their own creativity with bravery and joy. Kathy’s journey beautifully illustrates that creativity is about more than crafting objects—it’s about fostering relationships, celebrating imperfections, and finding happiness in the process.

Her stories reaffirmed why so many of us are drawn to fibre art: it’s a realm where creativity and connection meet, and where the beauty of our work stems from the love and care we pour into each piece. Whether it’s a whimsical dragon or a delightfully imperfect rabbit, the magic lies in the imperfections that make each creation unique.

I left our conversation inspired to lean into my own creative imperfections and to continue building meaningful connections through the things I make.

To all the creators reading this: let Kathy’s words be your guide. Be bold, stay true to yourself, and savour the joy in your craft. And if her story moves you to create something inspired by her tutorials or her journey, be sure to share it with her. As Kathy so beautifully put it, seeing your creations “makes her whole day.”

Stay inspired,

Sally xx
